For the second year we are ranking the top 15 most promising storage start-ups. It's not easy to classify storage start-ups as they are involved in completely different technologies (basic hardware and subsystems, de-dupe, cloud, archiving, etc). But we did it. This ranking is the result of the opinion of a journalist - not a consultant or an expert - following daily the worldwide storage industry considering of course the technology of each company, but also their most recent financial rounds of funding and their growth when available. Anybody else trying to the do the same ranking will get different results.

These days, it can prove downright daunting to keep pace with the constant strides storage vendors are making in the industry. This is especially true when it comes to flash storage, a technology that has not only emerged as a major disruptor but also spawned an array of products – many of which add unnecessary complexity to enterprise-level storage environments.

Enter Coraid, which has upgraded its EtherDrive Ethernet SAN platform to support an all-flash configuration called EtherFlash. This new solution provides high performance, low-latency access to flash drives sans the bottlenecks and limitations inherent with legacy storage and Fibre Channel networks. I spoke last week with Kevin Brown, Coraid’s CEO, about how his company is breaking new ground in the SAN space and the beauty of being able to offer an enormously flexible “one tier for all” storage product.

The problem with trying to compete around a core competency in the data center is that everybody pretty much uses a variant of the same basic technologies. So while some companies are better than others in terms of the number of people they need to manage the overall data center environment, the technologies themselves are not providing a substantial competitive advantage.

However, the folks at Coraid, a provider of Ethernet-based storage area networks, and Arista Networks, which provides data center switching software that runs on top of standard Intel-class processors rather than more expensive custom processors typically found in switches developed by incumbent network infrastructure vendors, want to change the equation. The two companies have announced that they are working together to bring their respective approaches to new core data center technologies to market.

Instead of converting a fibre channel protocol to run over an ethernet signal, as Fibre Channel over Ethernet (FCoE) does, or converting SCSI commands to run over Ethernet, as iSCSI does - both of which use IP - why not use raw Ethernet frames as ATA over Ethernet (AoE) does?
